Yosemite: A Winter Postcard

January 31, 2016 By Angela Neal Grove

Image of Half Dome, Yosemite National Park in winter with a deep golden sunset glow on the top | Photo: Angela Neal Grove

It was late afternoon when I reached Yosemite. There was a brief stunning view from Highway 120 as the sun disappeared behind ominous storm clouds. Then the skies rapidly darkened. Walls of plowed snow lined the slippery road. Chains were mandatory but the road cleared as I dropped from 6,000 ft to the valley floor and passed  Gates of the … [Read more...]

Shangri-La Discovered – A 2015 Highlight

January 1, 2016 By Angela Neal Grove

The Quest..... ...for Shangri-La began in Tacheng near the Yangtze and continued to Cizhong, on a bluff above the Mekong River. (Searching For Shangri-La) I was already in awe of the jaw-dropping landscape of mountains, gorges and neat terraced villages perched on remote plateaux. Searching for Shangri-La

November 15, 2015 By Angela Neal Grove

Here the Mekong, Yangtze and Salween rivers tumble from the Tibetan Plateau carving jaw-dropping gorges twice the depth of the Grand Canyon. Mt. Kawagebo soars to 22,000ft, crowning ranges of mountains where more than one hundred tower over 16,000ft. This … [Read more...]

A year ago I was on the Orion, a boat bound for Borneo and the tiny port of Kumai. Kumai has the dubious distinction of being the birds-nest soup capital of the world. Soup production, however, was a side-show. Endangered orangutans were our quest. We were on an expedition arranged by Lindblad to see these primates in their home. Destination Camp … [Read more...]

Katmandu Quake Triggers Memories

April 27, 2015 By Angela Neal Grove

As soon as I heard the shocking new news of the 7.8 Katmandu quake my first reaction was to look at photographs taken so many years ago. Memories of time spent in Nepal and Katmandu are some of my most treasured. I felt I had found my pot of gold, for this Katmandu Valley was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. Today 3rd … [Read more...]
